Bluegrass Review Dec 2-Dec 8, 2017 (second hour) #1649

A couple of songs depicting personal trouble open the show. One is about a missed connection, the other about settling long-standing anger. The Gem of Bluegrass focuses on how bluegrass substyles keep emerging and that some of them have long lives. Long after the first generation of bluegrass is gone, first generation styles persist, and that is why we play a group of Stanley Brothers songs. Early in 2016 we visited Phil and Vivian Williams of Seattle. Not only are they great players of old-time music an bluegrass but they have recorded the music for decades and released it on their Voyager label. During his time in the northwest, Phil and Vivian recorded Benny Thomasson, one of the most important North American fiddlers ever. On today’s show, Phil and Vivian reminisce about Benny, and we play some great Benny Thomasson recordings.
