Bluegrass Review May 6, 2017-May 12, 2017 (second hour) #1619

The music world lost a great songwriter, Merle Haggard lately. Merle was known a a writer and singer of country songs, but his influence was felt widely, including in bluegrass music. We play some outstanding Merle Haggard songs early in the show. Then, our Gem of Bluegrass considers professional and amateur impulses in bluegrass. Bluegrass artists frequently emphasize their grassroots connections. However, it is almost always the pros who advance the music. Finally, we consider the bluegrass connections of the great songster Leadbelly. He died in 1948, but singers are still singing his songs.
