Bluegrass Review Feb 17, 2017-Feb 24, 2017 (second hour) #1608

Laurie Lewis’ new Cd pays tribute to Hazel Dickens and Alice Gerard. One of the Hazel and Alice themes was singing traditional songs. We play one by Laurie, and one by Hazel and Alice. Bluegrass Music owes a lot to the blues; in fact many hold that weaving the blues into all of his songs was bluegrass founder Bill Monroe’s greatest innovation. The Blues and Bluegrass is the title of today’s Gem of Bluegrass. Later, we talk to Yellow Springs, Ohio bluegrass historian Fred Bartenstein about Carlton Haney, the great bluegrass promoter. Haney is credited with “inventing” the bluegrass festival.
